17/03/22 2:10 Cheltenham - Pertemps Final System

1st Pileon 16/1 - 70

2nd Sire Du Berlais 11/2 - 65

3rd Ballyandy 18/1 - 55

Pileon came a very close 2nd in the Martin Pipe 2 years ago off a mark of 138, comes he went up to 143 and today he comes here off 135. He won a qualifyer at Sandown, beaten The Cob, then was beaten back here in January, where he didnt jump well. I think the system likes him because he is unexposed at this disance with winning at Sandown over 3m, the Cheltenham was good but the better ground could help. He was right up there despite a mistake and it was only over the last fence he really faded but there wasnt anything too close, so was eased down. The hustle and bustle of the race should suit as it didn in the Martin Pipe, and the ground is fine (it was soft in the Martin Pipe). He is only 2lb higher than winning 2 years ago, before he went to the Martin Pipe. Its definitely a risky one, however if he can recapture the run in the Martin Pipe he will be bang there.

Gordon Elliott likes to win these big handicaps at Cheltenham, so you can never ignore his runners, and Sire Du Berlais is ertainly one of them. Unfortunately he is the best horse in the race so has top weight, his jockey claims 7lb which will help a lot. He was 2nd in a Grade 2 at Navan in November but is now 4lb lower, but it was his run at this meeting last year where he came a gallant 2nd in the Grade 1 Stayers hurdle. His stats at this track are 4, 1, 1, 2, that includes a win in this race in 2019, off a mark of 145 today its 156, so its going to be tough, but lots in his favour. He has a massive chance here.

Ballyandy is another very good horse in his day, in his day he has run at 2m and most recently he has run at 3m and is 2/2 over this distance, his last win was very easy on heavy ground and soft wont be an issue, he is just a good horse. He has a 3rd to his name in the Coral Cup of 148, and today he is 150, he won the Bumper here too in his youth, in fact i think he was the last British horse to do so. His jockey claims 10lb and you cannot dismiss him either. He has a great chance.

I wouldnt try to put you off any of these. I will stick with Pileon but the other 2 both have solid claims too.

My Selection: Pileon 16/1
