This time 42 years ago a horse stepped out at Doncaster to cement his name forever in the history books, his name still fondly spoken in racing circles and outside was called Nijinsky, he had already won the 2000 guineas and The Derby and was attempting to win the Triple Crown since Bahram won it 33 years previous. Nijinsky was a 'difficult and unruly' colt, but once on the gallops he worked hard, he had difficulties through out his 3yo old career, having colic just before the Derby and very severe ringworm before the St Leger, so severe that a lot of his hair fell out and he couldn't even be saddled. Njinsky however was a true champion and he won the St Leger, but the race took a lot out of him, he lost 29lbs in weight. Lester Piggot said he was never the same horse. After the Leger he lost both his next races, by a nose in the Arc from a awful stall draw, but he showed what a champion he was and fought so hard to the line, from so far back, and then after his loss i
