What Next? Life After Frankel

Frankel

Frankel’s confirmed retirement from racing marks the end of an era. Although it is sad to see him go, we are now on the lookout for the next ‘Frankel’ another horse that will capture the heart of racing fans around the world.

This year’s 3 year olds held some promise. The leading contender of course was Camelot. Personally I was not a fan, but I could see the horse had class and was special, nowhere in the league of Frankel though. Unbeaten in his 2 races as a 2 year old, his 3 year old campaign started well winning the 2000 Guineas, then The Derby, followed by the Irish Derby in conditions that clearly didn’t like, he still showed his class and slogged it out at the finish.

Camelot became favourite to win the St. Leger and complete the Triple Crown, which hadn’t been achieved since Nijinsky in 1970. It wasn’t to be. People criticised Joseph O’Brien for his ride in the race, but at the end of the day, it was just too far. Pure and Simple, no blame can be placed at the jockey’s door. He has since been beaten in the Arc but once again, we knew Camelot didn’t like Heavy going, and in a field where all the horses have showed just as much class as he, he was never going to win, but he was a gallant 7th. Although a horse you cannot place in a league with Frankel, he certainly tried.

My eyes fall on the 2 year olds coming up. One in particular has shown that maybe he could already be on course to take Frankel’s place. His Sire is New Approach who himself was a Derby winner out of Galileo, just like Frankel. Trained by Jim Bolger in Coolcullen, Ireland this horse has won 6 races as a 2 year old, two of which are Group 1’s, and is currently favourite for the 2000 Guineas and The Derby. If there is any horse that can become a champion this horse is half way there. The horse goes by the name of Dawn Approach.

Although I think Dawn Approach is something very special, there are a few horses that could interfere with his plans. The first is a horse trained by Aiden O’Brien that goes by the name of Mars; although he has only had one race and won it well, he is another horse by Galileo, and his Dam was by Danehill, who also sired Frankel’s Dam. So there are connections there. And I understand the yard think he could be good. And year after year this yard produces horses of such high calibre as Yeats, Fame And Glory, Giants Causeway, Istabraq, Rock Of Gibralter, High Chaparral and Galileo himself.

The next horse is Reckless Abandon who is 5 races unbeaten; of those races one was a Group 1 and the two were Group 2 races, Reckless Abandon is slightly different in that I think a mile is the furthest this horse will go, but that will not take anything away from the possibility he can become a champion or not. Frankel never went further than 1m 2f. Another unbeaten colt is Toronado who has potential, but I am not sure if he is as good as Dawn Approach, only time will tell

Onto the fillies now, and there are some very interesting fillies out there. The first in line has to be Certify, who has proven herself versatile on ground. She is another horse who I cannot see going over a mile, but she is unbeaten in 4 races now.

Rosdhu Queen looks a very interesting filly, and I wasn’t sure of her to start with, but she has answered every question asked of her. Unbeaten in 4 races, which include a Group 1 and Group 2, it was her last race in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes that she made a very good impression, and it is obvious that there is more to come from here

Just The Judge is probably the last of the fillies, 3 runs unbeaten including the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes; she will be one to keep an eye on too.

All in all, next year looks to be very exciting; out of all of those I think Dawn Approach is the horse that could make a very big impression. Is he as good as Frankel? Time will tell. We might have to wait 40 years before one comes along,  a horse that special is only ever really seen once in a lifetime, so it is me being hopeful that there could be another who comes along right after him. There certainly is the potential in the current crop of 2 year olds.

With stallions such as Galileo along with his son New Approach and now his most famous son Frankel, they could produce another champion along the road, and maybe our wait will not be a long one after all
