Can Camelot Go Down In The History Books?
This time 42 years ago a horse stepped out at Doncaster to cement his name forever in the history books, his name still fondly spoken in racing circles and outside was called Nijinsky, he had already won the 2000 guineas and The Derby and was attempting to win the Triple Crown since Bahram won it 33 years previous.
Nijinsky was a 'difficult and unruly' colt, but once on the gallops he worked hard, he had difficulties through out his 3yo old career, having colic just before the Derby and very severe ringworm before the St Leger, so severe that a lot of his hair fell out and he couldn't even be saddled.
Njinsky however was a true champion and he won the St Leger, but the race took a lot out of him, he lost 29lbs in weight. Lester Piggot said he was never the same horse. After the Leger he lost both his next races, by a nose in the Arc from a awful stall draw, but he showed what a champion he was and fought so hard to the line, from so far back, and then after his loss in The Champion Stakes he was retired to stud, where he became one of the best sires of the Twentieth Century
Today Camelot will try to emulate Nijinsky success and win The Triple Crown, can he do it? Quite probably. His odds suggest he is unbeatable today. Unlike Nijinsky, who only ever won on firm ground, Camelot has won on Good and sft/heavy ground. Still uneaten in 5 starts, his last race out was probably his toughest so far. In hindsight he should probably of been withdrawn from the Irish Derby, at one point in the last 2 furlongs, he looked like he might be beaten, he wandered slightly and was never travelling well through out the race. Born to Sea who is full brother to Sea The Stars (one of the best horses of this century) nearly beat him, but Camelot manged to pull out the reserves and won by 2 Lengths.
Camelot has had a nice break since that race and should of gotten over it well. It's on ground he will thrive on and although this will stretch him to the limit, Camelot should have the class to get him home. However there are probably 4 horses that could stand in this way. Main Sequence, Thought Worth, Michelangelo and Ursa Major. These horses should all get the distance well, and none will go down without a fight. I would of though Thought Worthy would probably be his main danger, but only time will tell. At 3:40 today the racing world will be watching to see if History will be made. And today will be a day that people could remember for many years to come
