10/02/19 4:20 Punchestown - Grand National Trial
1st Dinnie's Vinnie 16/1 - 70
2nd Fitzhenry 5/1 - 60
2nd General Principle 6/1 - 60
3rd Monbeg Notorious 12/1 - 55
4th Some Neck 5/1 - 40
As you can see, it is quite a tight race.
Dinnie's Vinnie just scraped top here, he isnt get any younger and is 2nd oldest in the race. He is 0-2 at Punchestown (PU & 9th) which is a worry, but he has won at similar tracks before. He will love the ground. of his 7 wins, 5 have come in his last 11 races since cheekpieces have been added. Luke Dempsy gets on well with him and has been on his for all his wins, from 21 runs. (placed 3 times as well) also since cheekpieces have been added, his stats over 3m 1f is 1, 8, 1. His last win was a Grade 2 over 3 miles 5f. He beat Fitzyhenry that day back in 3rd, and there was a 16lb difference between them, with Fitzhenry carrying more. Fitzhenry is now only 6lb higher.
Fitzhenry's connections are going great guns at the moment, and first time blinkers may have the desired effect on Fitzhenry. I think he would prefer the rain to come, but he has placed at the track and we know he likes the distance. He could go well.
General Principle needs the rain, and i think this will effect him if it doesn't. His wins have all come on soft and heavy ground. If the rain doesn't come then it may be too quick, this horse is an out and out stayer, and if it does turn soft then i would be jumping on. He won the Irish National last year on heavy ground over 3m 5f. He could still run well, but i fear he wont win if it doesnt rain.
I think Monbeg Notorious is the same regarding ground however, he steps back up in trip, the last time he tried this distance was on heavy, maybe the quicker ground may help him get the distance. If it does i think he has ew claims
Some Neck is the choice of Ruby Walsh, he is yet to win at 3 miles or above yet, and he fell last time which is a worry. He has won here before but also unseated as well. The going should be fine though and you can never underestimate a Mullins runner. Personal preference would be for Isleofhopesndreams, he is a proven stayer, and a winner here, plus 2 2nds over fences here. His profile looks a little better.
My Selection: Dinnie's Vinnie 16/1 (General Principle only if the heavens open 6/1)
2nd Fitzhenry 5/1 - 60
2nd General Principle 6/1 - 60
3rd Monbeg Notorious 12/1 - 55
4th Some Neck 5/1 - 40
