Cheltenham 2013

Less than 2 months till the Cheltenham Fesitval

With the weather causing chaos for racing up and down the country, it’s hard to imagine that in less than 2 months’ time, the gates to Cheltenham open to start an amazing 4 day festival, that will attract some of the biggest names in horse racing, culminating in the pinnacle of those 4 days which is The Cheltenham Gold Cup.

However with meetings being cancelled left, right and centre, it means that some Cheltenham entries are not getting much needed runs beforehand.

Nicky Henderson reports that Bobs Worth, Oscar Whiskey and Long Run are among several Cheltenham entries who are desperate for runs. Although hopefully all those 3 will get runs before Cheltenham, in fact Bob’s Worth is engaged at Cheltenham next weekend, if all goes well.
He does fear that he might have to race some horses against each other, and obviously would prefer to avoid this early on. Darlan, Binocular and Grandouet are some whom he  would prefer would not meet.

Simonsig is causing Henderson other worries though, in the way of, he is supposed to be on a break, but Simonsig has other ideas.

Nicky Henderson is not the only trainer with these worries Donald McCain says World Hurdle entry Peddlers Cross is desperate for a run, hopefully racing at Cheltenham will go ahead next Saturday as he is entered into the Cleeve Hurdle, also other horses in desperate need of a run before Cheltenham are Our Mick and Ballabriggs.

Somebody who is not letting onto his concern for lack of racing seems to be Paul Nicholls, who actually seems to be looking forward to Cheltenham. Lexus winner Tidal Bay goes to Cheltenham with every chance. Entered into both the World Hurdle and the main event The Gold Cup, it looks like whatever race they chose he will have a great chance, especially after his brilliant win in the Lexus. He will go to Cheltenham via the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown.

Impressive winner last time out Rocky Creek, could look to miss Cheltenham altogether though, he does however hold entries at Cheltenham still, but Paul Nicholls is actually keen to bypass Cheltenham this year and go to Aintree with him.

Some interesting information for you though is Paul Nicholls thoughts on Wonderful Charm, a horse that came over from France. His debut on a British course at Chepstow resulted in a very nice win, however Ruby Walsh reported the horse had ‘breathing issues’, and so had a wind operation.  Since then Nicholls reports that Wonderful Charm is a completely different horse now and they have ‘high hopes’ for him.

Wonderful Chamr could head to the World Hurdle at big odds

He is entered into the World Hurdle and Coral Cup, and he will probably end up in the World Hurdle, via the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las on the 2nd Feb or the National Spirit at Fontwell.  Nicholls does say though “I personally wouldn't want to be offering him at 33-1+ in a Big Buck's-less World Hurdle this year, that's for sure”.

Bet365 are offering 25/1 for Wonderful Charm.

Whatever happens to the run up to Cheltenham, which starts the 12th March, one thing is sure, it will be one of the best meetings ever.
